Clear Coat Restoration

What is clear coat restoration?
  • Clear coat restoration is the process of restoring your clear coat to factory and often better than factory conditions. If you have ever looked at how your vehicle's exterior panels look in direct sunlight, you have probably seen an array of circular shaped lines also known as swirl marks, cobweb scratches, and clear coat scratches. Clear coat restoration can repair these and other surface imperfections.
Can you perform clear coat restoration without the purchase of a package?
  • We require at least our exterior-only Stage I (Starting at $60.00) to properly clean and prepare for the clear coat restoration process.
What other imperfections can clear coat restoration repair?
  • Water spots - Hard water that has left mineral deposits in your clear coat.
  • Acid etching - Bird droppings or bug remains that have sat on your clear coat too long to be washed away.
  • Buffer trails/Holograms - Commonly caused by an inexperienced detailer that was using abrasives on your vehicle.
  • Scratches - This depends greatly on how deep they are. If you can run your finger nail across it without catching the scratch, it should be repairable but, we can tell you when we see it in person.
  • Oxidation - A light haze that develops on your vehicle over time giving it a faded appearance.
  • Overspray - Often removed with the clay bar process but can still find its way into clear coat restoration depending on the severity.
Can all of those surface imperfections always be repaired?
  • It is possible that certain imperfections cannot be repaired without involving lengthier repair methods or consulting a body shop. For instance, if bird droppings were to sit on your clear coat for too long and they have left acid etching, it may not be possible to fully repair them depending on how deep they have etched. In most cases though, everything can be fully repaired.
Why is this an important step?
  • Even if you are not concerned with how your vehicle looks in direct sunlight, preparation before putting on any wax or sealant plays a very important role in how the exterior surfaces will look after the detail is complete. Observe the image below:

Without a smooth surface for the light to refract evenly across it, the reflection given off from your detailed vehicle will not be as clear or bright as it could be. This is how it would reflect:

The red lines demonstrate how differently the light/reflection would bounce off of your vehicle's body panel. The difference between a restored panel and an un-restored panel is dramatic in person.

Another detailer offers this service for much less money, why should I choose you over them?
  • While the other detailers are guessing, we determine clear coat thickness with our state of the art DeFelsko depth gauges. Jason's Auto Spa utilizes a DeFelsko PosiTector 6000 thickness gauge to analyze layer thickness in ferrous and non-ferrous metals and a DeFelsko PosiTector 200 thickness gauge that utilizes ultrasound technology to determine layer thickness of up to three individual layers on composite vehicles. We also have an array of high quality polishing pads, different polishing machines for different surface conditions, various polishes and compounds for specific needs, innovative lighting designed to reproduce intense sunlight for surface analysis, and to the most important part: Experience. Clear coat restoration is always done by one person - the founder of Jason's Auto Spa, collision repair and paint technology graduate, eleven year professional detailer, Jason Gauer. There are over one hundred possible combinations of polishers/polishes/pads to approach any clear coat restoration task. This is not a time for guessing. Why is a paint thickness gauge important?
  • It is important to determine the total thickness to track how much clear coat you have removed after the restoration services because there are guidelines to keep within. It is also important to know if certain areas are too shallow or too thick, as they will both react differently than the other body panels and we would adjust our restoration methods accordingly. These are very costly tools to purchase which is why most detailers overlook them and take risks with your vehicle instead. We believe that is unacceptable.
